It's A New Season

It is a new season for the boy as far as school is concerned. This year, he is in a more academic program in a different campus within the district. I know I shared my reservations about this before but during the IEP meeting, we all decided that it would be best for him to transfer. His awesome former teacher, the school speech therapist and the occupational therapist were all convinced that he had received all that he can from his previous placement. As his former teacher said: "I don't want to see him go but I don't want to hold him back."

So we began this year in a new class, with a new teacher, in a new school. He has more classmates (12 students in one class), less aides (2 as opposed to 4 last year), more subjects and a whole slew of other things that come with the package. He even has homework (thankfully, they are not hard, yet).

While we are almost a month into it, I think the period of adjustment is not over yet. With all these changes, it can get overwhelming for him. I'm a little apprehensive as to how well he will adapt but, at the same time, excited to see how much more growth he will have.  I can already see the progress he has made in such a short time. He is definitely using more language. His vocabulary has already expanded (or he's just using the words he had stored up). He is more clear about his feelings. Even his appetite has improved ( then again, that might just be a growth spurt). I think this really is better for him once he has settled down, and I'm hoping and praying I'm right.

Oh, by the way, my calendar says it's Autumn but the weather here says summer. I guess we have not caught up to that new season yet, :)

  1. I know how hard it was for you to make this big change. I'm so glad it is working out for him and he is doing so well.
